Is There Bull Sperm In Energy Drinks

Is there bull sperm in energy drinks?

For some reason, there has long been a rumour circulating that energy drinks contain bull sperm. If you take a look on social media, you will see that there are plenty of people who claim that this disgusting ingredient is present in all of the popular energy drinks that we have become familiar with. The ingredient everyone is referring to is “taurine” but you will be pleased to know that it is not an extract from bull testicles. You’re not going to find bull sperm, testosterone, or urine in your energy drink (not that that suddenly makes them healthy!).

What is taurine?

You will find taurine in a lot of energy drinks. It is an amino acid, which contains sulphur, and plays a key role in fat metabolism. It occurs naturally in all animal and human tissues, and so is actually key in regards to our everyday functioning. In fact, it is even an ingredient in baby formula, as babies are not able to produce taurine. It can also be used to treat a varied range of disorders, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure.

Where does taurine come from?

The word “taurine” comes from Taurus, which is Latin for bull. However, it does not have anything to do with bulls, especially not bull semen. So, why on earth did they use a mythical bull to name this amino acid? This is because the first occasion scientists were able to isolate the amino acid was from a specimen of ox bile. Ox bile is produced by the gallbladder – not from bulls!
