For anyone, motion sickness can be a horrible feeling. It is believed to be caused by a conflict of signals between the eyes, ears and sensory receptors. A bit like if you’ve ever played VR, and in the game you are moving, but in real life you are motionless. Motion sickness can stop you from being excited about a holiday or simply make you avoid long trips. Thankfully, there are a few key tips you can follow to make sure that you’re not suffering from nausea.

Pick the right seat

It’s been shown that it’s a good idea to book a window seat, as that way you’ll be able to look out over the horizon. This ensures that at least two of your senses, visual and sensory receptors are experiencing ‘matching’ signals. When the plane moves, you see the ground or sky move too. Also, the most stable seat is going to be over the wings, so it’s a good idea to sit there if you can.

Avoid reading or staring at a screen

It can be tempting to bury your head in a book or stare at a screen in order to take your mind off your motion sickness. This will actually make the situation worse and it’s best to cast your eyes somewhere else or enjoy an audiobook instead.

Eat a light meal

It used to be thought that flying on an empty stomach was a good idea, but that’s not true. Instead, you should have a light meal before you fly as this will help to settle your stomach. However, avoid eating easily fermentable foods, in excess, too much or unhealthy foods.

Use air vents

If you’re anxious about your motion sickness then there is a good chance that you are going to get hot and bothered. Make sure that the air vents are working and are giving you a steady stream of fresh air on your face in order to keep you cool.

Take some medication

If push comes to shove, then it might be a good idea to take some tablets that are going to help with motion sickness. This isn’t ideal, but there are plenty of over-the-counter medications that are going to be able to settle you during a flight.

Drink ginger

Ginger has been proven to reduce motion sickness during a flight, but drinking it can often be easier said than done. Thankfully our beloved Overhang contains ginger to help settle your stomach and also give you a shot of other vitamins which are going to benefit you during a stressful situation.
